Welcome to the world of autism.
I can still remember someone saying that. I remember reading everything I could about autism, attempting to do what I always do; figure out what was wrong and how to fix it.
It wasn’t until much later (like a YEAR) that I came to understand that this world of autism was one I couldn’t fix, couldn’t make go away and couldn’t run from.
My son Lucas was diagnosed over 14 years ago, and our family has come a LONG way since then. I still haven’t figured out how to fix autism, but I have learned that life goes on in spite of it. We live in a different place now, and our values have changed (I think for the better), all thanks to this new world we live in.
We have a company, LucasWorks, that’s not only devoted to helping others with autism, it also trains students with autism and other disabilities in job skills. Lucas and other students from our local school district work here 4 mornings a week, assembling products, preparing orders for shipment and practicing thier social skills.
Speaking of Lucas, he’s going to the state fair today with his school. He’ll come home around 3:00, tired and dirty, and I’ll have to really work to get some information out of him about what he saw and did at the fair. If I’m lucky, I’ll get about 5 words out of him, and I’ll love every one of them! You see, in the world of autism, that’s a whole conversation ![]()
